Human Beach Nagase on Etajima: A Quiet Beach Near Hiroshima (and My Razor Clam Obsession)

I wasn’t looking for a swimming beach when I found Human Beach Nagase on Etajima Island near Hiroshima.

I was driving around the island and thought I’d stop for a few minutes to look at the water. The Seto Inland Sea was calm, the beach curved gently around the bay, and hills were visible across the water.

You might expect my first reaction to be, “What a lovely place to swim!”

It wasn’t.

“I want to dig for razor clams!”

That’s what happens when someone who likes fishing and beachcombing visits a beautiful stretch of sand.

This is a firsthand account of my unexpected stop—not a report of swimming, clamming or taking part in any marine sports. I didn’t do those activities here.

A quiet, curved beach on Etajima Island

Human Beach Nagase, also called Nagase Beach, is in the Nomi area of Etajima City. It’s an approximately 400-meter man-made beach with a broad, gently curving shoreline.

The water was calm on the day I visited. There were small islands and hills beyond the shore, and the scene felt very different from a busy beach resort.

It was the kind of place where you could simply stand for a while and watch the sea.

I’d stopped during an Etajima drive, rather than coming here for a whole day at the beach, so I enjoyed the scenery and kept wandering.

A beautiful beach—and all I could think about were clams

When I see a broad stretch of sand like this, my brain doesn’t always behave like a normal tourist’s brain.

I start wondering where the razor clams might be hiding.

I could almost picture myself crouched over the sand, searching for those little holes with a bag of salt. I hadn’t brought any equipment, and I did not actually collect clams here.

The place just made me want to try.

Of course, the fact that a beach looks promising doesn’t mean anyone can harvest shellfish whenever they like. Fishing rights and seasonal restrictions matter.

According to Etajima City’s official Nagase Beach information, razor clam collection is prohibited from May 1 through July 31. Other local regulations may apply too. Check current rules and permitted areas before considering any shellfish collecting.

The beach has rules worth knowing

There was a visitor-rules sign when I visited.

Etajima City explains that the area is managed as a swimming beach. There are toilets, changing facilities and showers, with a free parking area nearby.

The official guidance also makes several restrictions clear: no barbecues, camping or personal watercraft in the beach area. Fishing inside the swimming beach is not permitted.

That’s worth emphasizing for readers who, like me, enjoy both fishing and the sea.

The rules help preserve a quiet place for visitors. Even if you’re only stopping to enjoy the scenery, leave no rubbish behind and respect other people using the beach.

Can you swim here? What about fees and facilities?

Nagase Beach is a designated swimming spot, and the calm water looked inviting when we stopped. But I didn’t swim, so I can’t personally review the swimming experience.

The city’s visitor guide lists beach-area hours of 7 a.m.–6 p.m., free entry and free parking. It also lists changing rooms, toilets, paid showers and lockers, and seasonal activities such as kayaking and SUP.

These facilities and activities may not be available year-round. Check seasonal information, actual weather and current conditions rather than assuming everything will be operating during a winter or spring visit.

What about the mysterious path that disappears under the sea?

While exploring Etajima, I also heard about a path that seems to disappear into the water. For a while I couldn’t remember exactly where it was, or whether I was mixing it up with another place.

So I won’t claim that I stood on it.

The Etajima Tourism Association now describes a tidal phenomenon near Nagase called Crystal Road. Under unusually high tides, part of the walkway can become covered by shallow seawater, creating an unusual scene.

It’s a separate thing to research if you’re interested in photographs, but please check the tide and official safety guidance, and do not walk into deep or unsafe water for a picture. I haven’t personally verified the experience.

A beach stop that reminded me why I enjoy Etajima

This stretch of water also brought back memories of Uminos, a seaside hotel where I once stayed on Etajima.

The hotel was a lovely part of our island memories, but there is an important update for anyone planning a stay now: Uminos ended its former hotel operation on March 31, 2026 and temporarily closed. It’s not a lodging recommendation for the present day.

If you want to read about that earlier experience, it’s in our original Japanese Uminos memory article.

For this particular stop, though, there was no big event. Just the quiet sea, the gently curved sand, the hills and the thought of hidden razor clams.

That was enough to remember it.

Getting to Human Beach Nagase

The beach is on Etajima, south of Hiroshima City. You can reach the island by connecting road bridges from the Kure side, or consider passenger ferry connections from Hiroshima Port and then local transport.

For a wider Etajima day trip with several coastal stops, a car offers flexibility. But a car isn’t the only way to experience Etajima—check ferries, buses and any locally available cycle rentals if you’d prefer not to drive.

If you’re already exploring Hiroshima’s city center, Human Beach Nagase is more of a separate island excursion than a quick walk from the Atomic Bomb Dome.

My verdict: a seaside pause, not a crowded resort

I went looking for a small detour and found a quiet bay with clear water, gentle waves and a beautiful curve of sand.

I didn’t swim. I didn’t go fishing. And despite how much I wanted to, I didn’t take home any razor clams either.

I simply enjoyed being beside the Seto Inland Sea.

For a peaceful seaside break during an Etajima day trip, that might be all you need.
