Sera Day Trip from Hiroshima: Flower Fields, Farm Gelato & Dream Bridge

I’ll admit it: before visiting Sera, I wasn’t sure what we’d find. A rural town in Hiroshima Prefecture, some flower fields, maybe a nice place to stop for a snack. That sounded pleasant enough, but not exactly a grand adventure.

Then I saw the flowers at Sera Kogen Farm. I started taking photos. And more photos. By the time I’d also eaten rich, creamy gelato at Donna and walked by Lake Ashida at Yume Tsuribashi Bridge, I had a completely different opinion of Sera.

Sorry, Sera. I underestimated you.

This is a real day trip I made by car, not a list of places I found on a map. Here are the three stops that made it memorable—and what I’d tell someone visiting from Hiroshima.

Travel note: The experiences and photographs come from my own visit. Practical information was checked against official and local tourism sources in November 2026. Flower seasons, admission prices and opening days change, so check before you set off.

The short version: is Sera worth a day trip from Hiroshima?

Yes—especially if you enjoy flowers, rural scenery and a relaxed drive. This is not a city packed with famous landmarks. The fun is in connecting a few different stops: a huge flower garden, farm gelato and a lakeside bridge.

A car makes this much easier. Sera’s attractions are spread across the countryside, and you should not expect to walk between them from a train station.

Stop 1: Sera Kogen Farm made me reach for my camera

Flower fields stretching across the grounds of Sera Kogen Farm in Hiroshima Prefecture

The flower fields were the highlight of my day. From one viewpoint, the colors spread out across the landscape. Walk a little farther, and suddenly the same field looks different. I kept stopping to take another picture.

Honestly, before coming here, I had wondered how exciting a field of flowers could be. Standing in front of it answered that question. There’s something about seeing all that color at once that a quick description cannot capture.

The best part was not a single famous photo spot. I liked wandering along the paths and seeing how the flowers changed with the angle. Even close-up pictures on my phone came out nicely.

Important: Sera Kogen Farm is a seasonal flower attraction, not a garden that guarantees the same flowers every day of the year. Depending on the event, you may find cherry blossoms, tulips, sunflowers, dahlias or other blooms. The 2026 autumn dahlia festival ended on November 3; check the official Sera Kogen Farm website for the next open event and its current flowering conditions.

Stop 2: Gelato Kobo Donna, a very good reason to take a break

After the flowers, I liked the change of pace at Gelato Kobo Donna. Instead of another big sightseeing attraction, this was a place to slow down, enjoy the farm atmosphere and eat gelato.

What I remember most is the rich, mellow creaminess. It tasted like something made with proper dairy, and the setting made the break even better. Flowers first, gelato second. That’s a pretty satisfying holiday formula.

Donna uses milk from a neighboring dairy farm, according to the local tourism association. Its opening days can vary by season and weather. Check the Donna website before making the drive specifically for gelato.

Stop 3: Yume Tsuribashi Bridge is a quieter detour

Yume Tsuribashi pedestrian bridge near Hattabara Dam and Lake Ashida in Sera

The name Yume Tsuribashi roughly means “Dream Suspension Bridge.” With a name like that, you might expect a gigantic, dramatic tourist attraction.

My reaction was more modest. It wasn’t the kind of place that made me shout in amazement. But it was pleasant to get out of the car, stretch my legs and look over the lake and surrounding hills.

The bridge crosses Lake Ashida by Hattabara Dam. It’s worth considering as an extra stop if you’re already exploring Sera, rather than making it the sole purpose of a long trip. Sometimes a small detour is exactly what a day out needs.

For location details, see Hiroshima’s official tourism guide to Yume Tsuribashi.

Planning your own Sera road trip

How far is Sera from Hiroshima?

For Sera Kogen Farm, the operator estimates about 1 hour 20 minutes by expressway from central Hiroshima, depending on traffic and route. Other stops are spread out, so add time for the roads between them. The farm’s English access guide includes directions via Sera IC and Kawachi IC.

When should you go?

Choose the flower event first and the travel date second. The farm’s scenery changes by season, and individual gardens have their own opening calendars. For a flower-focused trip, arriving when the flowers are actually in bloom matters more than fitting every possible stop into one day.

Do you need to rent a car?

I explored Sera by car, and it suited this route. If you’re a visitor relying on public transport, check the current connections before committing to multiple countryside attractions. For drivers visiting Japan, also confirm that your driving licence and any required permit are valid here.

If you’re planning to visit the flower fields, Donna and Yume Tsuribashi in one day, a car gives you flexibility between these countryside stops. You can compare rental car options in Japan on DiscoverCars. Check the total price, insurance terms and pickup location before booking.

What about rain, walking and snacks?

  • Wear comfortable shoes. Flower gardens include outdoor paths that may be muddy after rain.
  • Carry water and sun protection; it’s easy to spend longer outdoors than planned when you’re taking photos.
  • Check both the farm and Donna’s opening calendars. They do not necessarily operate on the same schedule.
  • Keep the plan to two or three main stops. A relaxed drive is more enjoyable than racing around the countryside.

Would I go back to Sera?

Yes. Before the trip, I thought Sera might be a place to drive through. It turned out to be somewhere I wanted to stop, look around and enjoy slowly.

The flower fields did most of the convincing. Donna’s gelato helped. Yume Tsuribashi was a pleasant finish, even without blockbuster views. Put those together and you have a lovely, unhurried day outside Hiroshima city.

If you go, check what’s flowering before you leave. And if you arrive with low expectations, as I did, you may find yourself apologizing to Sera too.
